What are Add-Ons and why do I need them

Add-Ons are basically new features for World Wind which are not produced by NASA, why do you need them? Well the simple answer is they are cool, you can use them to view other planets, see the routes taken by famous explorers, zoom into areas not covered by NASA data, and much more. This page will introduce you to a few of the many Add-Ons available and give you basic instructions on how to use them.

Using Add-Ons

Most of the Add-Ons listed on this page come as a self installing exe, simply download them, doubleclick them and follow any on-screen instructions as you would any other application you download off the internet. Note - make sure World Wind is closed before installing new Add-Ons.

Once installed run World Wind and the Add-On will automatically be loaded, some Add-Ons will add an icon to your World Wind toolbar, which when clicked on activates that Add-On, for example the Darwin Add-On has an icon which looks like this -

Other Add-Ons need activating from the 'Layer Manager', to open the 'Layer Manager' click the icon in World Winds toolbar -

The 'Layer Manager' shows a list of all Add-Ons instaled plus any imagery data sets included by NASA, find the Add-On you are looking for in the list and click in the square box next to its name, it will become ticked, this means the Add-On is activated -

You can then safely click the cross at the top right of the 'Layer Manager' to close it.

Some Add-Ons may have additional options, such as the Solar System Add-On, to find these open the 'Layer Manager' and click the triangle next to the Add-Ons name, a sub menu will appear like this one -

To choose an item in a sub menu simply click on the small circle next to that item and it will become selected, like mercury is in the screenshot above.

New Worlds

Mars (17.7 MB) - With this Add-On you can view the red planet, after installing either double click on the desktop icon or select 'Mars' from World Winds File menu. This Add-On includes fairly high resolution Mars imagery and a set of place names, so you can easily search for the largest volcano in the Solar system 'Olympus Mons', the only downside to this Add-On is that it does not include elevation data.

The planets (5.49 MB) - This Add-On is activated via the layer manager and shows low resolution imagery for all the planets in the Solar system. The Add-On has very low resolution images, no elevation and planet sizes are not accurate, but it is interesting to see the huge differences between each planet, and may be useful in the classroom.

Solar System (5.04 MB) - This Add-On is similar to the one above, but includes more imagery for each planet, such as the Venus radar image shown on the right, it also includes several moons not included in The planets Add-On.

The Earth

Demis WorldMap - This Add-On produced by Demis turns World Wind into a 3D atlas, as you zoom in more detail is shown, such as rivers, railway tracks, major roads and local placenames. This is perfect for geography lessons, and just looks very cool.

Political World - This Add-On makes it easy to see the different countries of the world by splitting them into different colours, it is best to turn on World Winds placenames feature when using this Add-On so you can see each contries name.

High resolution Imagery

OneEarth - This Add-on allows you to view high resolution imagery for various places outside the United States, for example Dusseldorf in Germany (shown in the screenshot on the right). This Add-On does not include a self installing exe so it is not as simple to install as the other Add-Ons on this page, but if you want high resolution imagery it is worth it.

World Wind Central Add-on Pack - This Add-On, like the one above, allows you to view high resolution imagery not available in the default install of World Wind, the screenshot on the right shows part of Wallace County in New Zealand. A self extracting exe is available, which makes installing this Add-On simple.

Exploration

Great Explorers - This Add-On shows the route taken by Ferdinand Magellan, who made first maritime circumnavigation of the Earth, move your mouse cursor over the 'e' icons to show information about significant events in the voyage.

Darwin (The voyage of HMS Beagle) - This Addo-on shows the route taken by Charles Darwin aboard the HMS Beagle, each icon has more information if you move your mouse cursor over it, clicking on each icon will take you to a relevant web page, and the route is colour coded to make it easier to follow the chronology of the journey.
