A

add-on
A feature that is not part of the core of World Wind. These can be layers, scripts or in some other way related to World Wind. Add-ons are usually community made.
Altitude
Distance above sea level.
ARC
NASA Ames Research Center

CRS
coordinate reference system

dataset
The imagery used to cover the surface of the world.
Also used: Surface Data.
DDS
Direct Draw Surface. World Wind saves textures in this File Format.

GIS
Geographic Information System
GML
Geography Markup Language [1]

KML
Keyhole Markup Language [2]

L

LandSat 7
The seventh satellite of the LandSat project. See LandSat 7 for information on the satellite's imagery in World Wind.
Latitude
Degrees difference North or South from the Equator.
layer
Data that can be shown or hidden on the planet in World Wind. A layer can contain any of images, text and trails.
Longitude
Degrees difference East or West from Greenwich, England.

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. See Rapid Fire MODIS for usage details in World Wind.

Orthophoto
A photograph that has been processed to have a uniform-scale.

pan-sharpening
The act of combining a low resolution color image with a high resolution black and white image to create a high resolution color image.

A prerecorded series of view changes and text display that can be run from within World Wind.

Scientific Visualization Studio

tile
An image from a dataset. World Wind downloads datasets one tile at a time.
Topographic
Graphic representation of the surface features of an area.
