What is STIP?

STIP (Student Teacher Interaction Program) allows you to use WorldWind as a teaching tool. STIP works over a local network or the internet. Several teaching methods loan modification allow you to take control of WorldWind remotely and interactively use WorldWind as a presentation tool. WARNING: The following documentation is far from complete, read at your own risk

Setting up an ad-hoc session

  • Find a jabber server (look here for a list of public servers).
  • With a normal jabber client connect to the server, registering an account if you don't have one already.
  • Check if the server has a conference service. If not, find a new http://worldwindcentral.com/ jabber server.
  • Join room STIP on that conference service.
  • Start WW on the host computer, load the STIP Host plugin and start it, entering credentials for the server you just logged into.
  • Once you see the host computer join the STIP room, make it a moderator.
  • Start WW on the client computer, load the STIP Client plugin and start it, entering credentials for the server you just logged into.

You should now be set to start using STIP.

Setting up a permanent dedicated server

  • Pick a jabber server to install (look here for a list)
    • STIP should work with most servers, as long as they have Multi-User Chat (MUC) support.
    • Your choice will depend on the platform and other requirement, but I recommend ejabberd.
  • Install (and if needed run) the jabber server of your choice.
  • Use a normal jabber client to register an account and connect to the server.
  • Register more accounts
    • STIP can use just one account, but it is highly recommended to create seperate accounts for hosts and clients
  • Join room STIP on the default conference service.
  • Make the room permanent and make the host account an administrator.
  • Start WW on the host computer, load the STIP Host plugin and start it, entering credentials for the server.
  • Start WW on the client computer, load the STIP Client plugin and start it, entering credentials for the server.

You should now be set to start using STIP.

Notes

  • Multiple computers can use the same jabber account to connect to a STIP session.
  • The host needs to be a moderator in the STIP room.
    • This prevents others from 'stealing' your session.
    • Room administrators will automatically be made moderators when they enter the room.
  • STIP uses the name of the computer it's running on for the room nickname.
